Zonos integration

Integrate your Zonos account with Shippit to automate international duties, taxes, and landed cost calculations.
Updated 3 months ago

If you have a Zonos account, you can integrate it directly with your Shippit account. Zonos is a cross-border commerce solution that automates landed cost calculations, ensuring accurate duties and taxes at checkout. This means no surprise fees for you or your customers.

This article covers how you can use Shippit with your own Zonos account. If you don't have a Zonos account, get in touch with your Shippit account manager and ask them about the different options available to you.

For more information about shipping internationally, including incoterms, and calculating duties and taxes, see the international shipping collection.

Why use Zonos?

You can use a Zonos account with Shippit to help you expand your business into new countries without needing to set up new warehouses or carrier integrations. Shippit partners with Zonos to help you handle the complexity of international shipping, from calculating duties and taxes to managing customs documentation.

Our Zonos integration helps you offer a transparent checkout experience with no hidden fees, and ensures compliance with international shipping regulations.

Is Zonos right for me?

Zonos is a good fit for you if you:

  • Want to pass on the cost of duties and taxes to your customers

  • Want to display a breakdown of duties and taxes at checkout

  • Need to ensure the accuracy of Delivery Duty Paid (DDP) fees

What checkout options do I have?

You can choose how to display duties and taxes at checkout.

If you use Shopify, you might like to offer fixed-price shipping to your customers. This allows you to present a simple, all-inclusive shipping cost at checkout. While your customers see a single price, you will still have visibility of the complete breakdown of shipping costs, including duties and taxes.

You can also choose to:

  • Break down duty and tax at checkout: This option shows your customers the full cost of their order, including shipping, duties, and taxes.

  • Include tariffs in the product price: This option hides the complexity of duties and taxes from your customers.

How are duties and taxes calculated and paid?

Shippit partners with Zonos to provide a landed cost guarantee. Here’s how the billing works:

  1. Your customer pays at checkout. Your customer pays for the duties and taxes when they place their order. You can show this as a separate amount or include it in your shipping or product costs as a flat fee.

  2. You book the order in Shippit. When you book the order, the guaranteed duties and taxes are shown alongside the shipping cost. This guaranteed amount is paid as part of your regular Shippit billing cycle.

  3. The carrier pays customs. For DDP orders, the carrier pays the duties and taxes to customs. If this amount is different from the guaranteed cost you paid, Zonos covers the difference.

If you bring your own Zonos account, you pay Zonos directly for duties and taxes instead of paying through your Shippit invoice.

Setting up a BYO Zonos integration

If you use carriers like DHL or FedEx with your BYO Zonos account, you need to provide your own third party billing account numbers. You can request these directly from Zonos. Without these, your carriers cannot bill duties and taxes correctly for DDP shipments.

You are responsible for ensuring that the service level mappings between Shippit and Zonos are correctly configured in your Zonos account. We recommend speaking with your Zonos account manager to walk through and set up the available mappings.

If you use Zonos for all of your international shipping lanes, you can set DDP as your global default incoterm. However, if you only use Zonos for specific lanes (for example, shipping to the US but not to the EU), you need lane-specific incoterm rules. Talk to your Shippit account manager to configure this.

If your product prices already include duties and taxes (inclusive pricing), the value declared at customs must reflect the actual product cost, not the inclusive price. Ensure your Shippit International Settings are configured to handle this. If you are unsure how your pricing model affects customs declarations, check with your Shippit account manager.

Integration type compatibility

BYO Zonos works with these integration types:

  • Shopify: Supported natively with no additional configuration required.

  • Custom integrations: Supported, but require additional API fields in your order payload. For more information, see the Developer Guide.

  • Other Shippit-owned integrations: Check with your Shippit account manager.

  • Externally-owned integrations: Your integration partner must build support. Contact the partner directly.

Requirements

To set up your BYO Zonos account, contact your Shippit account manager with these details:

  • Your Zonos API Key for both staging and production environments.

  • If you want to use carriers like DHL and FedEx, you need your unique third party billing account numbers. You can request these directly from Zonos.

Account settings

When you have set up your account, you need to make sure your service level mappings are configured correctly within your Zonos account. Contact your Zonos account manager for help setting this up.

To avoid customs delays, ensure you have configured fallback values in your Shippit International Settings for:

  • HS Code: The tariff code for your products.

  • Country of Origin: Where your products are manufactured.

  • MID Code: Required for all shipments to the United States.

These act as defaults when individual orders do not include this information. For more information about configuring your duties and taxes settings, see the default international settings article.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: When you use Zonos with a BYO account, Shippit provides the quote, but does not invoice you for duties and taxes. Your invoice comes from Zonos directly.
