Understanding orders with multiple shipments

Everything you need to know about handling customer orders that need to be sent in more than one shipment

Updated this week

Sometimes you need flexibility in how you ship your orders. Maybe you're fulfilling different parts of an order from separate warehouses, or perhaps you need to send some items to your customer with a specialist carrier. Shippit's split order functionality allows you to create an order with multiple shipments that are sent out using different carriers, or from different store or warehouse locations, all while keeping the messaging for your customers clear on what is arriving, when, and with who.

You can use split orders for:

  • Partial shipments: Send part of an order from your warehouse, and others from your retail store.

  • Combining regular deliveries with goods that require special handling: Ship regular items with a standard carrier, and big and bulky or dangerous goods with a specialist carrier.

  • Offering shipping flexibility: Provide customers with the option to have some items delivered express and others with standard shipping, all within the same purchase.

About split orders

When you have the Group Order ID, you can have up to ten individual orders associated with it, as long as they all have the same recipient address. Each order can be assigned to a different carrier, and use different service levels (standard, express, or on demand).

You can create orders from different stores that are all associated with a single split order, but the stores must belong to the same company within your Shippit account.

To create a split order, you must use the group order API endpoint to generate a group order ID, in conjunction with the usual Order API to create the orders that are part of the group. For more information about using the endpoint, see the developer documentation.

If you are using an integration, you need to upgrade your integration so that it is using the group order API endpoint. For more information, get in touch with your Shippit account manager, or contact us.

Your customers are notified about tracking events on each order as they move through the network. You can also choose to send an optional message when the last order has been finalised. To do this, you need to use the Finalise Order API endpoint. For more information, see the developer documentation.
