Authority to leave (ATL) grants your carrier permission to leave a parcel in a safe location at the delivery address even if no one is available to receive it. This can streamline the delivery process, help prevent missed deliveries, and enhance your customers' experience by avoiding the need for re-delivery attempts.
This article covers how to set authority to leave in your Shippit account, for authority to leave information suitable for package receivers, see the package receiver authority to leave article.
Set authority to leave as default
You can set authority to leave (ATL) as your default preference for all your orders from your Shippit account settings.
Setting ATL as default for all orders
Log in to your Shippit account.
Click the downward arrow in the top right-hand corner and click Settings.
On the left navigation pane, click Carriers.
At the bottom of the page, in the Advanced settings section, toggle on Set Authority to Leave (ATL) as a default for all orders.
Click Update to save your changes.
💡NOTE: It is also possible to set authority to leave using the Shippit APIs. For more information, see the Developer centre.
When ATL is applied
Whether authority to leave (ATL) is applied to your order depends on a combination of your default store settings, specific carrier requirements, and any instructions you provided using the Shippit APIs. Here's how these factors determine the final ATL status:
Your store's default setting is the primary factor. If you have your carrier settings use ATL by default, most of your orders are sent with ATL.
Regardless of your store's default ATL setting, you can turn ATL on or off for an individual order when you create it, either using the Shippit UI, or by API.
Certain situations can override your default settings, regardless of your default settings, or individual order settings:
If you are shipping alcohol, most carriers and legislation require an adult signature on delivery. In these cases, the order automatically has ATL turned off.
If an order is marked as cash on delivery (COD), payment is required when the order is delivered. In these cases, the order automatically has ATL turned off.
If you use 500g satchels, these can be set to ATL only. If you allocate orders to these satchels, the order automatically has ATL turned on.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: When you manually create a new order in the new orders page, the Authority to Leave checkbox might not immediately reflect your order's ATL status. However, if you open an order after it is created, the ATL setting is displayed accurately.

My ATL settings are not applying in the way I expect them to
If you find that ATL is not being applied as you expect, check these settings:
Navigate to Settings → Carriers and double check your default ATL settings.
Review the order to see if anything might be over riding the default settings, such as alcohol deliveries, the 500g ATL satchel, or COD.
If you're creating orders directly with the Shippit API, check if you have the
authority_to_leave
parameter set.If you're using an ecommerce or WMS integration, such as Shopify, check whether you're sending ATL settings directly from your integration.
