Instant Print for Shipping Labels

Use Shippit Instant Print to set up your handheld scanner and enable scan to search and scan to print.

Updated over a week ago

You can use a handheld scanner to confirm an order and print the shipping label. To get your handheld scanner up and running, you need to install Shippit's Instant Print. This can save you time by confirming the order and printing the label in a single action. It can also help prevent mistakes manually typing in order numbers.

If you already have Instant Print set up, you find out how to get your scanner up and running with our Set up a handheld barcode scanner article.

Install QZ Tray

Instant Print requires QZ Tray to be able to detect and manage the printers in your network. You need to install QZ Tray on each computer that you want to use to print shipping labels. QZ Tray works on Microsoft Windows, Apple MacOS, and Linux.

Installing QZ Tray

  1. On the computer you want to install on, use your browser to navigate to the QZ Tray downloads page. QZ Tray works on Windows, MacOS, and Linux, and the site automatically detects which version you need.

  2. Click Direct Download to download the file.

  3. Open the downloaded file, and follow the prompts to install the software according to your environment. You might be prompted to install Java, which is an important tool that QZ Tray uses to detect your printer settings.

Set default printer settings

When you have QZ Tray installed, you need to select your default printer in Shippit.

Setting default printer settings in Shippit

  1. Open the drop down menu in the top right of your screen, and click Settings.

  2. Click Instant Print to go the printer settings. If you get a message saying Set up your printer for Instant Print you need to install QZ Tray. Follow the instructions in this guide to install QZ Tray. The first time you go to these settings after you have installed QZ Tray, a series of popups ask you to confirm that Shippit can connect to QZ Tray. Click Allow in each popup to continue.

  3. In the Instant Print section, select the default printer to use for each available document type. Click Test print to check that the printer is working correctly.

  4. Click Pick & Pack to go the pick and pack settings.

  5. In the Scanner preferences section, select Scan to print.

  6. Click Update to save your changes.

💡Note: Check the default paper size in your system settings, and make sure it matches the size of your labels.
