Australia Post is resuming its shipping services to the United States and Puerto Rico. Services for business customers will resume on Monday, 22 September 2025, three days ahead of schedule. Services for retail customers will resume on or before Tuesday, 7 October 2025.
This article explains what these changes are and what you can do to continue shipping to your customers in the US with Australia Post.
What's changed?
Australia Post temporarily paused services to the US due to changes in customs and import tariff rules made by the US Government. These changes require all duties and taxes to be paid before goods arrive in the country.
To meet these new requirements, Australia Post has partnered with Zonos, a US-authorised customs provider. This partnership allows you to continue shipping to the US, provided all customs information is accurate and duties and taxes are paid upfront.
What you need to do now
To resume shipping to the US with Australia Post, you must register with Zonos, and meet all US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) restrictions.
Register with Zonos
You can set up a free Zonos Verified Account by providing your business details directly to Australia Post:
Business Parcel Contract customers: Provide your Merchant Location ID (MLID) number.
MyPost Business account holders: Provide your Australia Post Business customer number (APBCN).
Australia Post has advised that shipments that are not linked to a Zonos Verified Account and are unable to have duties paid will be returned to the sender and may attract additional processing fees.
What other carriers can I use to ship to the United States?
Speak to your Shippit account manager to discuss the carriers that are right for you. We currently have agreements for shipping to the US and all major retail destinations with Zonos and our partnered carriers such as FedEx, Asendia, and our own Smart Routing International.
You can also review the know your international carrier collection.
Follow existing US shipping restrictions
In addition to registering with Zonos, you need to continue following these essential steps for all US-bound shipments:
Use accurate HS codes and detailed product descriptions: Properly classifying your products is now essential for US customs clearance. You can do this by providing a detailed product description or, preferably, the correct HS (harmonised system) code. Shippit can automatically apply the correct HS code from your product details, simplifying the process. For more information about writing product descriptions, see the effective product descriptions article.
Provide Country of Origin (COO) details: You must include the Country of Origin for all products in your shipments to the US. For more information about determining the country of origin for your shipments, see the international duties and taxes article.
Include the manufacturer ID (MID) code for all products being shipped: you need to include a MID code for Customs and Border Control (CBP) to provide import clearance. For more information about MID codes, see the international duties and taxes article.
Plan duties and taxes upfront: To avoid your customers being charged unexpected fees, you can calculate the total landed cost before shipping. Shippit partners with Zonos to show you a full breakdown of duties and taxes before you book, including a landed cost guarantee, without requiring an additional Zonos account. For more information about the landed cost guarantee, see the international duties and taxes article.
Switch to a DDP-enabled carrier: We strongly recommend using a carrier that offers a Delivery Duty Paid (DDP) service. With DDP, all duties and taxes are paid upfront, ensuring a smooth customs clearance process and a better experience for your customers. For more information about using shipping incoterms, see the shipping DDP article.
Check if you require a duties and tax solution: There are a number of tools such as Zonos and Global-E that can help you calculate and pay duties and taxes. If you prefer not to set up another account with a duties and tax partner, you are still able to ship to the US with Shippit using our native duty and tax calculations, and a partnered carrier.
