Fuel Surcharge

The fuel surcharge is charged as a percentage on top your rates and it may fluctuate on weekly or monthly basis depending on our carriers.

Misdeclarations & Other Surcharges

In addition, below are the types of additional charges that you may be billed post-booking (after month's end) and how they are calculated. 

 

When can I incur a "corrected weight" charge (i.e. misdeclaration charge)?

The carrier will always measure the weight and dimensions of your package in their automated sortation system. If there is a difference between what they capture vs what was declared on Shippit, this is considered under-declared (i.e a misdeclaration). The carrier will invoice Shippit based on their measured weight & dimensions, then Shippit's Account Team will invoice the sender a corrected weight (misdeclaration) charge in the following month.

It's crucial to ensure both the weights and dimensions of your articles are correct at the time of booking to avoid any additional weight charges. You can do this by:

  • Measure the weight and dimensions of your product(s) in its final packaged form i.e. including padding & packaging. 
  • Check the accuracy of individual SKU product dimensions & weight in your WMS platform
  • Check to ensure your product data is being imported
  • Check the correct measurement units (e.g. cm, mm, m, kg, g) are being used for the bookings
  • Check the dimensions of your package presets in Shippit app are correct
  • Mount any items 30 kg or greater chargeable weight on a skid or a pallet and declare the dimensions including the pallet

 

What are some weight variation issues that can result in a misdeclaration charge?

1. Dead Weight vs Volumetric (Cubic) Weight

When it comes to freight, you may not always be charged by how much the article actually weighs (or the "dead weight"). Carriers may charge you for the "volumetric weight" (or cubic weight) if your article is not very heavy but can fill up their delivery truck to capacity faster if it were full of such articles. This means carriers will need to take into account the volume of the parcels, as they aim to maximise the quantity of parcels they can carry in their vehicles while maintaining profitability.

To calculate the volumetric weight (kg):

The carrier will charge you the greater between the "dead weight" and "volumetric weight". This is also known on your invoice as the "charged weight". 

For example, if you have a box of pillows weighing 2 kg, with box dimensions 70 x 40 x 40 cm, then the volumetric weight will be 28 kg. The charged weight will therefore be 28 kg. 

*Please note: 4000 cubic ratio is not used by every carrier, please check with your carrier.

 

2. Weight Brackets

If there is a misdeclaration that pushes the charged weight of your article into the next weight bracket, you may be billed the difference as an additional charge. Please note that carriers always round up weight to the nearest kilogram as an industry standard. 

In order to minimise this type of charge, make sure you know where the weight brackets occur for each of the carriers you are using via Carrier Surcharge Matrix and choose the carrier(s) that is most suited for your shipping needs. 

 

3, Palletisation & Tail Lift

Due to Australian OH&S standards, you will need to use a skid or pallet for any boxes that weigh 30kg or more as a forklift will need to transport the box at pick-up and delivery. The carrier will charge you a manual handling fee as well as a misdeclaration fee as the pallet measurements will now be part of the item's dimensions (drastically increasing the volumetric weight). 

For example, TNT uses 1.25m x 1.25m pallets which are larger than the average skid. This can easily add over 100 kg volumetric weight as charged weight to your booking along with the > 100 kg heavy residential surcharge (see below), which is very costly. Please note that this is part of the TNT's policy and Shippit will not be able to override this.

 

What are the Surcharges that I can incur?

Shippit makes an effort to include many applicable surcharges in the quote at the time of booking to produce an accurate quote. However, this is not always possible as there are some surcharges can only be calculated once an order has been reviewed, approved, and / or completed. These will be billed as an additional charge in the following month.

Please refer to Carrier Surcharge Matrix for a full list of surcharges that a carrier may bill you for, and refer to the Quote Price vs Post-Booking Charges table to understand the conditions in which costs and surcharges can be included or excluded from a quote, and which surcharges are only applied post-booking.

2. Residential & Heavy Residential Pick-Up / Delivery Surcharges

If the weight and dimensions of the items are declared correctly in the Shippit app, Residential Delivery surcharges should be included in the quote. However, if the carrier has remeasured and reweighed the items to be greater, these will be billed as an additional post-booking charge. This surcharge mostly applies merchants using TNT, but can also be present among other carriers.

Please be aware, if you are shipping from a residential address, TNT will you the Residential Pick-Up surcharges at post-booking as well. This is not included in the quote as the address type (residential or business) is determined by the TNT driver upon collecting your parcel. For this reason, TNT is not recommended if you are shipping from a residential address.

3. Manual Handling Surcharge

Manual Handling surcharges are billed on a per item basis, and apply to parcels that may not conform to the carrier's sortation system (i.e. cannot be processed on their conveyor belt and requires manual handling). This can be due to size, weight, fragility, poor packaging, unusual shape, liquids, and dangerous goods. 

Manual Handling may be included in the quote for oversized items, but for other non-quantifiable features such as fragility, liquids, items over 30kg that are not on a skid, etc, these will be charged after the carrier collects them i.e. post-booking. 4. Redelivery Fee

This applies with Express or Priority carriers if the customer hasn't given authority to leave and isn't available at the time of delivery. This will be billed post-booking as it is not possible to determine whether a redelivery service will be required at the time of the quote. 

5. Futile Charge

This charge is incurred when a pick-up is attempted by the courier but unsuccessful, usually due to the package not being ready or the request being cancelled too late. Please refer to Futile Charges & Missed Pick-Ups article for full details. This will also be billed post-booking. 

 

What to do if you believe the carrier has made a mistake?

If there has been an error on the carrier's part we will endeavour to retrieve compensation for you, however sufficient proof must be provided first. Carriers have strict requirements for disputing their cubic measurements.

It's important to note that payment to Shippit is still required until the dispute has been finalised with the carrier & credit has been approved & received otherwise your account will be suspended.
